Day 3: Tower of London and Alice in Wonderland

Happy early new year! It is 9:19 London time as I write this. N is asleep (or hopefully soon to be) upstairs and Daddy and M&A are on their way home from downtown, hopefully bearing dinner and some libations.

We got another late start today due to N having another poor night of sleep. He is really off his schedule and it is showing. Hopefully the early (!) bedtime tonight will get things back on track.

After we had a late breakfast (generous word for what we ate), we headed downtown to the Tower of London. It was a grey, cold day, which seems perfect for viewing the most famous prison in the country. Daddy spent a lot of our visit waiting in the queue (see what I did there?) to see the Crown Jewels. M, N, A and I walked along the tower path – raised – and went through various cells and defense spots and other depressing locations. The girls were great and held N's hand, carried him piggyback at times, and generally kept an eye on him. We rejoined Daddy right when he got to the front of the line, so that worked out well. We saw the jewels – sceptres and orbs and crowns and swords and scabards and Daddy got yelled at for trying to take photos.

We had to rush out of the Tower to get on the tube to make it to Covent Garden for the Royal Ballet's performance of Alice in Wonderland. It was very close – we almost didn't make it. Downtown London is extremely crowded for New Year's Eve tonight and it was mayhem when we got off the train. We made it, and made our way to the upper upper upper corner reaches of the upper upper balcony. It's a long ballet – 3 hours – and N made it through the first act with only some talking and wriggling. No crying. But it was enough to convince us that it was probably not going to last, and that it made sense for him to go home. So he and I left and took the tube home by ourselves, which was a fun adventure. We had a quiet dinner here, Facetimed with Grandma Sandy, and took a long warm bath (well, he did). He's now almost asleep and hopefully will get more rest tonight!

Daddy and the girls are en route home – actually, they just got home so I am going to sign off for dinner!

A just reminded me of something funny from today. N was looking at a little photo of a grisly scene of a beheading from the 1600s. He said, "What is that?" We pulled him away, and A said, "Oh, someone had a boo boo."
