After a VERY long drive yesterday, we made it to Kiawah Island last night. 12 hours in the car. The kids were great. N watched a lot of movies, and we made 3 stops for bathroom breaks. The 12 hours was due to terrible traffic in Virginia and northern NC. What a pain. But otherwise uneventful.

This morning we discovered a flat tire, which threw a small wrench into our plans but which was quickly fixed by AAA. Another snag: Kiawah Island is out of bike rentals. But we found another company that rents bikes for cheaper, and delivers and picks them up, so we were able to get bikes by the end of the day. We haven't ridden them yet but we will tomorrow.

Today we checked out the beach – HOT – and then spent most of the day at the pool. N was tentative at first but he got into it by the end. Tonight we went back to the beach before dinner and the water was sublime. I think this might be the nicest beach we've been to in the US – wide, calm and warm.

We grocery shopped tonight and had dinner outside on the deck. All around a great day to start off the vacation.
