So something really crazy happened yesterday.
N and I went out to walk Hobart around 645, after A's graduation. N was on the hoverboard and I was walking Hobart. We went our usual route – down Kirke to Cedar, left on Cedar, then left on Hesketh. When we were about halfway up Hesketh between Cedar and Magnolia, we saw three people walking down the sidewalk. One was a black woman and two were white men, in their 20s. We looked at them, both looked closely at the black woman, then kept walking, then looked at her again, then kept walking. She looked at us, probably wondering why we were looking at her funny, and then she kept walking with her friends, in the other direction from us.
N and I then looked at each other, and we said, "That woman looked a lot like the $1 million winner of Survivor last season, Maryanne." We thought that it was really odd that Maryanne would be walking down Hesketh Street on a random Friday evening, but that she really did look like Maryanne if Maryanne had short hair. This is Maryanne:
After they were pretty far away the other direction, N asked if we could go back and follow her and see if that was Maryanne. I was skeptical, but I agreed. We turned around and started moving quickly down the street in the direction they had gone. We gained some ground because N was on the hoverboard and I was walking quickly with Hobart. On the way, N asked if I would talk to her and what I would say. Would I say, "I am sorry we were following you and looking at you funny – you look like someone famous on TV"? That's the truth, but it would sound pretty weird. I didn't have a better idea, though, and I was still pretty sure that it wasn't Maryanne and that I wasn't going to say anything. Meanwhile, we were getting closer and closer. N asked me to listen carefully to see if she was talking about Survivor with her friends. She wasn't. Finally, we were right next to them on the street – they were on the sidewalk – and she made eye contact with N. She smiled at N, and then said, "You look like I am familiar to you." I said, "Yes, you do look familiar to us. Are you?"
And she said, "Yes, I am Maryanne!"
WE COULD NOT BELIEVE IT.
IT **WAS** MARYANNE.
We then talked to her for a few minutes. She could not have been nicer! We told her that N was a superfan, that he loved her on the show, that she deserved to win. We asked what she was doing in Chevy Chase – visiting friends – and she learned that N had just had a birthday. She chatted with us for a little while, told N happy birthday several times, and then went on her way. We got a few pics, all of which look like this:
And then we spent the next few hours asking each other, "Did that really just happen?"
N has been very excited about it ever since. What are the odds of that happening???
So cool.
Also, N had his last soccer game today. They won! Here is a team photo:
And we had a nice dinner tonight with Grandpa Ron and Grandma Dina.
Tomorrow is M's graduation!
