Back to School Night

Last night was Back to School Night. We got to sit at the girls' desks, learn more about their days, and learn about their teachers' styles. They are very different. A's teacher is pretty laid back and easygoing. She speaks with a Southern twang and says that homework shouldn't be a big deal in 2d grade. She seems to love teaching this grade and is very sweet. She will be supplementing the DC curriculum with other materials, and journal writing will start soon. M's teacher is a bit older, and has lots of experience as a Montessori teacher. She likes to discuss big topics with the kids, and seems to take great pleasure in them. She, too, is on the laidback side – no screamers for either one.

M says she doens't want a "nice" teacher – she wants one that will make her learn. I don't think that will be a problem – her teacher seems to grasp what a good student M is and will challenge her.

Daddy and I left notes for the girls, and we enjoyed reading notes the girls left for us and other things they have written so far.

Here are some things A wrote:

I want to be a MOVIE STAR when I grow up

Here is the note that A left for us:

Dear Mom and Dad:

I am having a great time in second grade. When we get here I put my snack in the snack bag and my lunch box in the lunch bag. I hang my backpack in my locker. After that, then morning work, morning meeting, and a bunch more. I think I will have a great year!

Sincerely, Love A.

Here is the note that M left us:

Dear mom and dad,

I had a good second week. Dad I finally presented my animal project.  I love school in Ms. Nickel's class. We learned to sing the Pledge of Allegiance in sign language.  My friends are great! Ms. Nickel has a Bearded Dragon, a Frog, a Tortoise, two crickets, and a Tarantula. (She has a lot of pets.) From M.

Cute stuff.

I have one more from A that I will upload tomorrow.

M and A seem to really like their teachers and class. They write the sweetest notes. You lucky parents have two wonderful, lovely and intelligent daughters.
Love,
Aunt Ann
