Back to School Night

Daddy and I went to Back to School Night tonight. Great to see their class, see the annual slideshow of photos of all of the kids (which always makes me cry (repeatedly)), hear from the teachers, and see the artwork and photos around the room. We painted Shabbat placemats for the girls, recorded messages for them (in response to messages they recorded for us), and signed up for Shabbat parent and Healthy Snack Day.

There were posters around the room with questions posed by the teachers and the kids’ answers. Here are some funny ones:

What happened to the fish? [It died.]

M: It got too fat.

A: It got too dirty.

What are you going to do for Rosh Hashanah tonight?

M: When Mommy and Daddy come home, we are going to Abigail’s.

A: We are going to open a present with a ribbon on it. It’s square. It’s purple. It’s a present for Rosh Hashanah. [This is the present Buppie gave us for our anniversary.]

What are some of the rules of the Pilim Class?

M: No climbing on the shelves.

A: Don’t throw hard things, like blocks, because you might hurt someone.

Tonight, the girls sang a funny song that they learned at school that I had never heard before. I found the lyrics on Google – I guess even Bruce Springsteen knows this song! It’s called "Mama’s Soup Surprise" (thought at school they call it "Bubbie’s Soup Surprise"). It goes like this:

When I was a little kid
I never liked to eat
Mom would put things on my plate
And I’d dump ’em on her feet
But then one day she made this soup
I ate it all in bed
I asked her what she put in it
And this is what she said:

"Oh, chicken lips and lizard hips
And alligator eyes
Monkey legs and buzzard eggs
And salamander thighs
Rabbit ears and camel rears
And tasty toenail pies
Stir ’em all together
And it’s mama’s soup surprise"

I went into the bathroom
And I stood beside the sink
I said, "I’m feeling slightly ill
And I think I’d like a drink"

Mama said, "I’ve just the thing
I’ll get it in a wink
It’s full of lots of protein
And vitamins, I think"

"Oh, chicken lips and lizard hips
And alligator eyes
Monkey legs and buzzard eggs
And salamander thighs
Rabbit ears and camel rears
And tasty toenail pies
Stir ’em all together
And it’s mama’s soup surprise"

This is a great blog. I remember the song from when my children went to nursery school. It’s still cute and fun to sing. I’m sure the teacher had wonderful things to say about M and A.
Love,
Aunt Ann
