Day 70

Three awesome things today:

A finished her history paper. Much smoother sailing til the end of the year.

N wrote this poem for his color poem assignment:

What is Yellow?

Yellow is lemons and the buttery taste of popcorn

Yellow is joy and happiness

Yellow is the beach when the sun is shining on the sand

Yellow is fun and lemons on a table

Yellow is the bright flowers in the garden

Also, we got this email from his teacher last week:

Hi Gayle,

I'm a little behind on emails this week so I totally apologize for not responding earlier. Please do not apologize for the timing of submitting work. You are doing an AMAZING job of keeping him engaged in learning and submitting assignments. I can't imagine how tough of a task you have on your hands with having to do your own work and making sure that the kids stay on top of theirs as well. I can also tell that you've really prioritized Nate's socio-emotional well being, as he really seems to be in a positive mindset despite all of the chaos that we are in. So really, keep up the awesome work and just do what you can. Any learning is better than no learning.

And we got this great email today from M's Chinese teacher:

Gayle, Dan, Maddie,

Maddie shared her good news with me regarding the NSLI-Y scholarship.  Just wanted to congratulate you all on her outstanding achievement.

I sent the following note earlier today to spread the announcement.  Even though we're not able to share the news of academic scholarships externally per GDS communications policy, I wanted Maddie's GDS teachers and advisers to know how hard she worked to accomplish this!

So very, very proud of Maddie!

Best,
Denise

Madeleine Feldman ’22 received word this weekend that she has officially earned a merit scholarship from the State Department’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth program to continue studying Chinese this summer.  NSLI-Y is part of a U.S. government initiative that helps prepare young Americans to become global leaders.  Awardees in this highly-selective program normally travel to their host countries for language study, but due to CoViD-19, Maddie will be participating virtually via a five-week intensive course.
