Back from NY!

Daddy and I were in upstate NY last night for a wedding – his friend PJ and his new husband Noah. It was a great wedding – complete with the recreation by the grooms of the last scene from Dirty Dancing. We drove up yesterday and came back early today. Thank you to Grandma Sandy for staying here with the kids overnight and entertaining them all day yesterday and half of today. They had a great time with you!

A has school tomorrow but M has another day off. She is sleeping over at a friend's tonight with a group of girls, and Daddy is off to London, so we're down to three here in the house tonight.

Moving in 10 days! So much to do.

Here is what's been going on in 1st grade:

This week in reading we continued to discuss perseverance. We read Brave Irene and Brave Charlotte. After reading each story, we talked about the obstacles the characters faced and how they persevered. This was the last week of the Perseverance unit. To close out the unit, the kids will created a comic strip story of one ways they have persevered in their lives. They wrote a rough draft, I reviewed it and marked it for edits and finally they edited and turned in a final draft!

This week we had our first FoodPrints session. The kids began by visiting the garden. In the garden they were able to find and identify veggies, remove weeds from the garden and find caterpillars! Once we were back inside we split into 3 groups and we rotated through 3 centers. The centers were: cooking, bean art and observational drawing. The kids were really well behaved and transitioned so nicely for Mrs. Wolfish. I send the recipe for the Simple Seedy Slaw we made in FoodPrints. It was a big hit for our class!

This week in math we completed our mid module 1 assessment. I am really impressed with how well they scored! We are still working with number bonds and addition. We learned about the commutative property of addition, meaning you can move the parts and still get the same whole, so 3+2=5 is the same as 2+3=5! We are working on balancing equations. For example, students are given a problem like 2+3=__+4 and have to find the missing added. They are also given problems like 2+3=2+4 and they have tell if it is true or false and explain their answer. We are also working on word problems. We are learning how to identify important info and extra info from the word problem, then how to use the important info to help us find the answer.
