Erev Passover

Dad, N and I are at RDV for Passover. We drove up tonight and got in around 9, and had a huge dinner waiting for us with Grandma and Grandpa. It is very quiet here tonight but will be busier tomorrow when Darrah and Jason and the girls arrive. A may come as well but she has a lot of work to do so she's not sure.

N is excited because he had a chocolate egg cream for dinner.

Some updates from this week.

Nancy, Geno and their exchange student Paula came to stay with us last night so they could show her DC. Here are N and Geno playing chess:

The weather was lovely in DC this week. It was so warm on Wednesday night that we ate dinner outside. Grampy came over and we commemorated the first night of Passover even though we didn't celebrate it, if that makes sense.

Some other things to share:

An update from N's chess club:

Welcome to the Magnus Chess Academy chess club at Chevy Chase ES!  I am very excited to teach your children, and I am looking forward to many weeks of fun chess!

For our first week, we started chess club by reviewing the concepts of check, checkmate, and stalemate.  Check is when the king is under attack but has a way to save himself.  Checkmate is when the king is in check and cannot be saved.  Stalemate is when the king is not under attack and neither the king nor any other piece has any legal moves.  Stalemate results in a draw, or tie; checkmate is how you win the game!  We also reviewed a few other different ways to draw including insufficient mating material and three-fold repetition.

During games this week, Nate, Ayan, Karim, Alex, Aamen, and Luke Z. got checkmates.  Congratulations, they are now on the ladder!  The ladder is a tool we use to keep track of who gets checkmates, so that each week players have a roughly even match-up.

Also some dog walk reports:

11:33 AM: Hobart was ready to get back into a cool house after today’s walk. A little more humid out. He peed many times and pooped. Have. A good weekend! Beverly

11:41 AM: Had a great walk with Hobart. I missed him! He peed many times, wondering what’s going on with the weather . No poop today. Beverly

And then there was this one:

Hi Gayle,

Shannon was unable to walk Hobart.  He kept running away.
