Lots of news today:
M&A had their second doses of the vaccine! This is a big step toward normalcy. So happy that they got the shots and grateful for science. We drove out to Hagerstown and made it right on time, thankfully.
N did NOT get a spot in the gifted program at CCES. He was identified as one of the kids in need of enriched learning, but then he went into a lottery and didn't get a spot. He's on the waitlist.
I had a very entertaining and reassuring exchange with Russell Shaw today:
Hi Russell! I hope you've had a good weekend.
I am writing to follow up on a conversation you and I had ages ago, pre-pandemic, which feels like a completely different era from where we are today… I mentioned to you that I was nervous that Maddie and Alexa's graduations would take place at the same time and day and that we'd be unable to attend both. You said that this had come up before and that you'd reach out to Bryan Garman to see if something could be done where one of the two graduations could shift a little to accommodate us.
I haven't wanted to bother you again with this when you have had so much going on (last summer you told me you were simultaneously trying to reinvent higher education and solve racism), but now we're getting close to one year away from June '22, I thought I'd raise it again as I know schools plan these events long in advance.
Thank you again for any help you can give us with this. I know, I know – this would not be an issue if Alexa had gone to GDS!
Thanks,
Gayle

Dear Gayle,
It's great to hear from you. And, I write with good news. Maddie won't be graduating from GDS on time! Given her mediocre academic record, she will likely graduate in the spring of 2023. Or maybe 2024. So there should be no conflict between her graduation and Alexa's. I'm glad we could make things easy. So long as Alexa is able to return home from college to attend Maddie's high school graduation….
Sorry-I'm sitting with Maya (she's doing homework) and she thought you'd appreciate that reply. As would Maddie.
I haven't forgotten your request! Katie Gibson and I have already spoken about it. I'll raise it with her again so that she can coordinate with Mamadou at Sidwell to ensure that the graduations take place at different times.
Back to reinventing education and solving racism!
Warmly,
Russell
