N loves math. He likes studying it in school, but he also really likes asking questions that require math for the answer. When he asks questions like that, or works out problems in his head that involve math, I always say to him, "Practical application of math, Nate!".

Over the last month, N has revived a study he did a year or so ago. He wanted to see which direction people turn when they get to the bottom of the stairs: right toward the kitchen or left toward the living room. To calculate this, he put a small bowl of paper squares at the bottom of the stairs, one bowl for each of me, Dad and him. We each got our own color. Each time we reached the bottom of the stairs, we were to put one of our colored squares in the container that corresponded with right or left, depending on where we turned. After a month or so, he ended the experiment and tabulated.

Here are the results!

We turned right toward the kitchen, collectively, 94 times and left toward the family room only 41 times. And it tended to be pretty evenly split by person.  Also it seems that N was the most diligent about participating in the study.
