Trigonometry Rap

M's game today didn't turn out too well. She was kicked/trampled (?) after having already blocked the ball, which is not kosher in soccer. She ended up coming out of the game (it was right before halftime) and never went back in, and the other team scored afterwards and the final score was 1-0. Such a bummer. This meant no Game 4. Also the team manager got into it with the ref after the incident and that didn't end well either. Daddy was at the game and it sounded dramatic. M was a good sport about it but ugh. She seems unscathed other than a sore nose.

The girls participated in something called National History Day for their history class. A and Ellie did a presentation board about Henrietta Lacks and M did a paper about the women's suffragette movement. M's paper was chosen as a finalist for the school-wide National History Day competition and she has now moved on to the city-wide competition with a group of other students. Congrats!

Tomorrow the girls go to NCS for an open house day. ("Lord thy daughters pray thee, fit us one and all." That is the first line of the NCS school song, "Like A Polished Corner"). I predict they won't be hearing or singing that tomorrow.

The girls have written a rap for their math class, and they are now performing it to the tune of "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air". They are doing a lot of retakes and it is 11:29 PM and at some point they just have to wrap it up. Here is the rap:

Team Reykjavik – 6

Trigonometry Rap – to the tune of the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” Theme Song

Now this is the story from A to Z

About sin, cos, and tan – trigonometry!

And we’d like to take a minute just sit right there

While you learn about trig – which is what we’ll share

Music Break (18 seconds – 16 beats)

In NW Washington, born and raised

In a math class is where we spent most of our days

We learned about sine, a triggy function

It’s used with respect to an angle – a junction

In a right triangle to find a missing side

You multiply a known angle by the sine

To isolate the side use opp over hypo

To answer, use a calculator – go to Home Depot

Now, cosine is a little bit different

It does not mean it is insignificant

Instead of using opposite and hypotenuse

You’ve gotta put ‘a’ over ‘h’ to good use

Use the cos function and enter the known data

It solves a triangle, you can use this lata’

This last function does not include hypotenuse

It is the tangent and that’s used to deduce

You have to divide the adjacent by the opposite

This triangle-solving method is truly predominant

This can be remembered with SOHCAHTOA

It can help with your studies from here to California

Music Break (18 seconds – 16 beats)

For example, when you’re staring at a tree with your face

You’ve gotta use tangent to find the length to its base

Multiply tan by the angle of elevation

Use the length from you to the tree in your computation

Multiply that by the product of the prior

You might want to double-check as a qualifier

That, my friends, is how you use tangent

Hopefully, this assists you on your mathematical mangent

Music Break (9 seconds – 8 beats)

Used in a right triangle – you must be thankful

Use the inverse of sin, cos, or tan to find a missing angle

That was the story from a to z

About sin, cos, and tan – trigonometry!
